The Spacious Mind – Rotvälta (Countryman 006)

You know that book "Hippie" by Barry Miles? On page 343 there's a picture of a wildlooking guy throwing a bomb aimed at The Establishment, and it's been suggested elsewhere that that man is B.C. Wolff. Yeah, me. Well, it's not, but that's not to say that it is not me, either - if you dig. Like, it could've been me, but I don't think it is.
It's spring 1970 and I walk out of the revolution, tired of the phonies, of the simplification, of the god awful stupidity that marks most of my peers. You can see in their eyes that they will become bank clerks, salesmen, corporate lawyers, whatever, and I will not. So I leave and and I'm still leaving to this very instant in March 2005, still creating my own revolution as I make new paths through the woodlands. And while I'm leaving I'm also still here. You follow?
Ok, soldier. If you're shopping via credit card and eating lunch at McDonalds, you're the enemy. If you support leaders and suppress nature you're on the hitlist. If you would like to see the cities burn down and with them the western mind you're an ally and you can come here to stay and make plans or grow vegetables whenever you want to. Don't expect me to be around though - I'm leaving, only to not show up when you expect me to. I've had enough of people, of civilization, of the George Bushes that live on every block in every country in every world.
If you think this has nothing to do with the CD that comes enclosed with this letter, think again. These words may actually be the words to the songs on there, but as always, they could also not be the words - you just have to decide on that one yourself, alright? It's time to celebrate the new man, man; he who rides the magic carpet and ploughs the fields and gives the finger to Wall Street before he blows it straight to hell.
1% free and all is one except me - that's exactly where it's at.
B.C. Wolff
(B.C. Wolff dreams of blue light rain and unbroken chains; he catches rabbits by the hair and double-twixts when he hits the air.

The Spacious Mind - Rotvälta (God Damn I'm a Countryman Records Countryman006)
It is always a great day when the new Spacious Mind CD arrives and you can take a journey to an other worldly place. This CD was recorded in 2004 and mixed in 2005 from what I understand and is made up of 6 parts (55 minutes long). Part One starts with a floating sometimes atonal organ based journey. All the music on the CD is instrumental. Part Two begins a 16 minute journey into space with an effected Rhoads piano and spaced out slow moving guitars, which slowly come together at about 5 minutes as the piece builds up but it never goes into a full crescendo like God Speed you Black Emperor stuff. The percussion sounds are often quite raw. The track fades into mostly tribal sounds that fade into deep space. Part 3 really takes me back to Pink Floyd Echoes, with the way the organ is played and the sounds filter through the soundscape. Part 4 begins with some beautiful E-bow guitar as a groove develops and Jens layers in the effected organ and piano sounds. They float all around the room. Part 5 begins with a heavy bass line that begins before the amazing guitar jam begins. Very cool stuff. Part 6 ends the CD with a very beautiful laid back piece of music. The Spacious Mind is a very unique band the succeed in pushing their music further out into space…. Take a tab of TSM and head out into the forest!

The Spacious Mind Rotvälta (Goddamn I’m A Countryman)
Despite the fact that I’ve experienced the Spacious Mind four or five times in the live setting I still look forward to a new opportunity with childish expectations. Next weekend I am going to their neck of the woods to see them play at the Moonshake festival. Besides hosting other acts such as Avarus and Magic Carpathians the event will also be the official release party for the quintet’s new Rotvälta CD. As usual the Spacious Mind try their best to expand the horizons of seamless instrumental interplay, prog-rock, drones, psychedelia, spacerock and classic Bay Area acid jams. It’s raw, gorgeous, loud, dreamy, dissonant and mystical at the same time, somehow managing to transcend all sorts of seemingly limited genre barriers. Unlike their most previous outing you can hear more classic Dead influences in a lot of places but don’t be fooled to believe that this is lame jam music. It's flushed out with so much sonic depth and clarity that there are moments I feel like this is the most perfected form of psychedelic music ever. I don’t think I need to tell you that such comment is an exaggeration but there’s something to the flowing dreamy keyboards, effect-drenched electric guitar and impressive drumming that just work in a truly mind-melting way. Dedicated followers will for sure need this, but it also works very well as an introduction to a band that rarely disappoints on record and never seems to go wrong in the live setting.

The Spacious Mind – Rotvälta (God Damn I'm a Countryman Records)
I like psychedelic jams. I like post rock. I like Spacious Mind. Simple as that. If I were to explain it a bit more I would say that if Mike Oldfield would have gone to sleep after the first Tubular Bells and woke up after 1999 and listened exclusively to post-rock he would have founded Spacious Mind. Great.

Goddamn I'm a Countryman Rec.     The Spacious Mind : Rotvälta (S,2005)****
Spacious Mind also are masters in improvising and creating a dreamy (and literally) spacious mind sphere with it. Keyboards, guitars, some drumming are like waves, or smoke from a brooding cake, seen with a saturated vision with desire, and patience with a focuse on the calm rising of the cake. (-I think it was about time I compared some music with food, so why not this time-). And be sure this is a spacecake rising, increasing its content of psychedelic ingredients, blending, getting hotter, with fastening rhythms, until it almost melt and becomes ultra-violetly shining. The Spacious Mind even more than before, here is like a ritualistic psychedelic event, not to be created twice with some kind of recipes. As soon the mentioned tension of "heat" is over, by the time of the third track, the left over mood is one of beauty and respect, expressed by organ, guitar, with slower, watery waves. At this point this could have been a perfect CD already for me, but it doesn’t end here. Some of the distant drifted sounds still are floating and wandering around, and they form the beginning of a fourth long track, as the time for the conscious consuming of the cake. This builds up more consciously and awakened, towards a more straight forward, long and strong space(cake)-rocking. And praise the Lord : this tension reached heaven delights as well. Thanks for this sharing, Amen ! But also here, when I thought this would haven been the most perfect CD, Spacious Mind still has a few minutes left on the CD. Echoes of mountain spirits winds echo and wander in the distance... and this is the starting point for a 6th long track already. This track starts with two, three meditative guitars, slow percussion and fender Rhodes keyboards, and it sounds like a small outro contemplation, where I must have been lost in time, because also this track seemed to have been almost 9 minutes long...
A splendid release of new psychedeli !.

The Spacious Mind
Rotvälta
Rock
(Goddamn I´m a countryman records)
